I’m addressing the controversy surrounding the re-release of the Dior Saddle bag that happened last week.
If you are a fashion follower on Instagram you would have seen sometime late last week all the fashion bloggers/ influencers & celebrities suddenly posted about their new Dior Saddle bag with the #diorsaddle (examples below). Now there is actually nothing wrong with this as the job of this advertising or marketing strategy was to get visibility. Also, bloggers and influencers have been getting “free stuff” in return for their posts and modelling shots since the beginning.
But what bothered me about this was the way it was done as my whole instagram was suddenly full of pics of everyone wearing this bag or unboxing it. To me it kind of cheapened the name of Dior. Dior to me is high end luxury and often doesn’t need typical advertising as the name in itself is enough. The House of Dior was established in 1946 and has led the way in tailoring with the famous Dior Bar jacket and of course the Lady Dior bag named after Princess Diana.
There is tons of history with this brand and I don’t think they in fact needed to do this as the bag itself is a re-invention of a classic style from the early 2000s. People were already interested in Maria Grazia Chiuri’s take on this when it appeared on the runaway as part of their 2018 Autumn/Winter collection and this peaked when we all were frantically searching Ebay and other bag re-sellers for vintage saddle bags. This then caused the price of these to skyrocket but for those of you that kept your saddle bags, good for you as you can now hashtag without forking out for the 2018 release. 😀
Personally I knew I had to have this bag as soon as I saw it on the runway. Big PLUS; I appreciate what an important bag this is in Dior’s catalogue and want to be a part of its resurgence under Maria Grazia Chiuri as I personally adore what she has done with the brand!
In order to obtain this bag or attempt to get it I have sacrificed the Fendi Mon Tresor mini bucket in the Fendi Zucca print for this one. I have also put on the market two bags that are no longer getting the wear they used to. One is the Givenchy Antigona in black so if interested let me know at email@example.com. The other is my Prada tote which to be honest is not in the greatest condition so who knows if it will even sell. I am in fact so smitten that I have pre-ordered for a September drop in Australia. I of course will be wanting it in the classic Oblique print and will use my lady Dior bag strap to make it cross body. Can you tell I’m excited and know exactly how to style it…haha.
I hope that you find this post helpful in unpacking the marketing blitz that happened with Dior and some of the reasons why I disliked it, as I said it has nothing to do with the freebie part and clearly know I still want this gorgeous bag!!!

As some of you may know Virgil Abloh of Off-White was named the Creative Director of Louis Vuitton Menswear and boy am I looking forward to his first collection which occurred at some point today.
Louis Vuitton recently tweeted some sneak peeks and WOAH!!!! I’m currently in love with this holographic Keepall. It does keep to the traditional Keepall duffel shape and all but the material is iridescent and mostly clear which has me jumping at the bits to see it in real life. I’m also loving the added touch of the oversized chain strap. I knew Virgil would bring his own style to Vuitton and this is exceeding my expectation.
Off-White’s success is due to its mix of tradition and streetwear plus the use of industrial materials e.g. seat belts as shoulder straps to bags…GENIUS….! I was hoping he would continue this with Vuitton and so far it looks like he has.
This Keepall iridescent bag looks to be available in blue too…
Some more sneak peeks of Virgil’s first collection. It looks like the oversized chain will be a theme throughout this season…cannot wait!!!!

So it turns out the 90s and early 2000s has returned in full force. I have seen many of the major fashion houses return to their signature monogram on accessories, shoes and ready to wear. Obviously it never really left Louis Vuitton as their monogram bags are some of the most affordable in their line and classic to boot.
I am talking about the Dior monogram that adorned the classic Saddle bag. First I can’t believe they re-released the Saddle bag with their signature monogram, I’m all but drooling all over my keyboard for this pic.
I’m not sure I can justify the Fall 2018 version but there are plenty of vintage bags on the market that you can pick up for a steal. I might be in fact doing that right now in my second tab trying to find the bargain of the century…😆
In other brands Gucci has been rejuvenated under the leadership of Alessandro Michele. They not only make me want to buy Gucci but want me to dive back into their archives waiting for the return of one of their classics. This can be seen in the Ophidia line and I’m particularly fond of this one. It has a vintage feel and a classic camera bag shape which lends itself to ease of wear and accessibility.
The other brand that has brought the monogram back in a bag way is Fendi with their beloved Zucca print. As far as I’m aware this print has been a part of Fendi since the 60s and has had a huge resurgence in the last two seasons. Everyone I know who loves fashion is after the Zucca print in the Kan I and Peekaboo styles. Personally if I had to choose I would pick the Kan I in the leather and velvet combination…😱
Fashion is cyclical and all the trends that existed in a particular period are in one way or another reinterpreted for a new era and generation. Fashion is fickle one minute the logo is too much and the next; bloggers and celebrities alike are adopting the monogram back into their wardrobes. This creates hype for these styles and then they sell out making us want it even more now that it’s not readily available. I’m not just saying this is applicable to only bags either because in clothing we are seeing a love of all things monogram. This is evident by Kim Kardashian West who wore head-to-toe Fendi with the double F logo. If you haven’t seen it get onto it ASAP!!!!
This is how the fashion industry sets the trends and ultimately creates the look of the season or year which will then filter down into the H&M, Topshop and Zara of the word who present the logo trend on a friendlier budget. I can only say this is a trend and who knows how long these classic monogram pieces will stick around for but at the moment the monogram logo is here to stay.
