Does Athleisure have a place in luxury fashion?

Hi all…I’m back with another post on a topic that many that write and speak about fashion have very strong opinions about.

Athleisure which to me is the idea of fashion that goes from the gym to the street. The clothing can often appear to be gym wear but a closer look at fabrics and style suggest you can go out and about with these items. Take P.E Nation for example there clothes seem often too good for the gym and not really practical for those that actually like to sweat when working out.

PE Nation.jpg

I have to be completely honest with you all, I’m writing this in a cafe sitting in my most comfy Lululemon leggings. These ones I don’t wear to the gym at all they are just worn for care free days.

With that background it seems that the luxury fashion brands of Gucci & Fendi etc… are jumping on board this trend and adapting it into their collections. Some brands are going one step further by having collaborations with brands that are only in the realm of streetwear or sportswear. A prime example is Louis Vuitton x Supreme. Supreme being a very popular skateboarding company that has expanded into streetwear. There is also the Fendi and Fila collaboration which I like and seems to be more readily available to when they dropped the LV x Supreme collection.

So this trend is clearly here but many in the fashion industry are of the view that it cheapens the brand and does not feel inline with luxury that these houses exude. In some ways I can understand this as these brands have a large history that have been ingrained in tradition; from the way they produce haute couture, the existence of their factories to the many that don’t have e-commerce websites.

But change is often slow and as the new generation of luxury buyers coming up can afford not only accessories but ready-to-wear so brands need to cater for what they are wanting in the market. These buyers don’t just want classic flap bags in black or tweed jackets but a brighter colour range as well as innovation that keeps inline with the brands aesthetic but puts a twist on it. So far I think Gucci is doing the best job with this as they often look to their archives but add something very modern to it as well.  I’m really digging their take on the tracksuit.

gucci tracksuit.jpg gucci.jpg

Brands like Off-White are doing great things for the streetwear fashion industry but many are questioning whether they can be considered high fashion. We all know Virgil Abloh is the head of Louis Vuitton menswear and has made waves in that space but Off-White who knows?!?! I personally think the likes of Chanel, Dior, Louis Vuitton and Prada are in a league of their own and so Off-White would never compete with their bags or clothing. I mean who could say a Lady Dior and an Off-White binder clip bag are on the same level.

For me I have nothing against high-end luxury brands going forward and making collaborations with other labels and putting out collections that are more streetwear looking. This is a sign of change and in fashion nothing stays the same, yes the Chanel classic flap and Lady Dior will always be there and most people will still be drawn to the likes of these. But why not cater for the next generation with something in the look and feel of the brand with the same quality that challenges the status quo.

To those that hate athleisure in the luxury market just don’t buy it is my view.

What’s Next

Hi

I’m back…I know its been a while but hopefully now I’m back on board with the blog more.

So this post is dedicated the idea in the fashion industry of What’s Next. What trends are going to be filtering down? What are we going to be wearing in 12 months let alone 18 months? What brands will be the new “IT brand”? These are all questions that with each season that passes, we who love fashion think about. Take a look at Off-White – who knew what this brand would become let alone having their creative director take on the artistic director role at Louis Vuitton menswear.

In saying all this I wanted to touch on a few brands that I think are going to be huge and really define what we see next in terms of trends, design and brand development & hype.

Ruslan Baginskiy Hats

There is something to be said about hats and if you know me I have loved hats since I was 8 years old. The fact that hats are becoming more mainstream make me super excited. I’m not talking baseball caps but baker boy caps, wide brim fedoras, berets & straw boaters. These hats can elevate the simplest of outfits and give you cool girl vibes.

Ruslan Baginskiy hats have been on my radar through Instagram and through the likes of Bella Hadid and Eva Chen. As soon as I could find stockists I was looking to see what I could get but found most of what I wanted was sold out. 🙁 So I’ve now added myself to the waitlist for a number of sites and can see that FarFetch have what I want available…yay!!

His prices are not cheap so might have to wait a bit especially considering these are hats but he is a traditional milliner so his artistry lies in this rather than just adding hats to an accessory line.

I’m most interested in this leather baker boy cap that has the added touch of patent.

I’m looking at these as well in cotton.

I’m so in love….

Danse Lente

This brand has been on my radar for a year already but I was never really sold until I saw their famous Phoebe bag in person. Apparently David Jones now stocks them which is great to be able to try on. I’m head over heels for the Phoebe bag and now know the exact one I want. I blame David Jones…

danse lente1

There are other designs but this particular one speaks to me for some reason and being able to see it in person so I could touch and try on made it easy for me to be converted.

Other designs that are popular include the Johnny with its interesting handle and odd bucket shape.

danse lente3

Poppy Lissiman

I’ve talked about the Australian brand Poppy Lissiman before in my sunglasses post but its worth repeating how this brand is set for world domination. I love how their sunglasses are super on trend at the moment but also how they’ve branched out to bags and accessories. Way to go!!! I have one pair of sunglasses but eyeing off their cute bum bags at the moment.

Nalin Studios

Nalin Studios jewellery has not only amazing pieces but the concept to release one piece/style per month is ingenious. It creates hype and allows for every piece to be unique as it’s not everywhere at once

I absolutely adore this necklace and find that it is currently available on their website. The design is stunning as all their pieces are, but this one is unique with the face on one side and the words on the back which allows you to wear it both ways. You get 2 necklaces out of 1 which is great considering their jewellery is not exactly cheap!!!

So that is it for me. I hope you guys found it useful to see what brands are going to be up and coming over the next year. Of course this was accessories focused with limited focus on clothing. Personally with clothing I find it much harder as I tend to stick with true classics from the high street e.g. Topshop, Sportsgirl & Uniqlo. This makes it easy for me to take risks with clothing without spending big but also maintain the classics at a great price too! Win, win I say.

If you have any brands that you think are going to be the next big thing let me know in the comments below.

Evolving Style

Hi everyone…

I’ve been thinking about the changes in my style since I’ve moved to a tropical island. There is one major thing that stands out to me I prefer comfort over style. For one, I like slides rather than strappy sandles that I would love in a Melbourne summer. My go to these days are my Birkenstocks not the greatest but so comfy as I walk the uneven roads and ride a scooter around town.

ED6E183B-E128-4148-900B-0E016D7AA382

Actual clothing wise there is not a piece of denim anywhere to be seen. While jeans even in summer in a city can be worn, here it just seems constricting and uncomfortable. I do own pants but there are always of a lighter cotton or linen material that doesn’t sit so tight to the skin.

I’m also very aware that the sort of style I go for in Melbourne, the minimalist vibe doesn’t translate well here. I can’t really get away with the high-waisted “mom” trousers and white tuxedo shirt or simple turtleneck. It doesn’t look the same when you walk by the beach everyday or when you head to get a quick foot massage. These days I’m loving my 90s slip dresses something that can be thrown on when I have no idea what to wear. My go tos also include many simple off the shoulder tops (you know the ones I’m talking about) and a maxi-esque skirt; or dare I say it denim shorts but they have to be high waisted and not too tight around the legs lol.  As you can see I’ve put a lot of thought into this.

FA447830-7778-42A8-9EEC-24F3E791705D

6D0FE55F-A18C-4DB7-9889-CBEE38E2FF37

The other thing is I’ve deviated from my color palette. I tend to favour neutrals such as black, white, grey, camel and all the tones in between these colours. This has been the biggest shock to me as I see myself going for yellows and I’m not talking mustard but bright yellows. I have experimented with color when going to an occasion but on an everyday basis it was always a no from me. I’m also loving floral patterns and prints. Although nothing too feminine such as dainty florals so the patterns and florals have to be different and BOLD. Something that screams ME!!!!

4E73859C-6E97-4276-8B96-C16993C6A959.jpeg

Obviously there is not much designer related stuff I wear here. This includes even high street brands like Witchery or Seed. I also very much avoid designer bags here as well but if I do it is something that can be easily cleaned and not so delicate such as my Chloe Faye mini backpack and my Prada Gardener tote in canvas. These are all good choices here and mix in well with the beach chic vibe I’m going for! More and more I’m loving rattan style bags that are hand made in Bali. I love that I’m supporting those that are making them here and ensuring that they can make a living. I love talking to the shop owners and learning about the history of what they do!

CCEB2578-57D3-4750-B455-6BAE8CE8F852

The one thing I’m noticing more and more is from what I see coming out of Europe and the US now that it is summer there. There seems to be a high rate of adoption in booth the low end and high end for straw and rattan bags. For example, Mango are selling those round rattan bags for twice the price you can get it for here. Sportsgirl are doing the same thing back home too. The other thing I noticed is basket bags are huge there so if you are interested in being ahead of the trend once summer hits in Australia I suggest trying to make your way to Bali. All these basket and rattan bags are here for a much more affordable price but more importantly you can often see where they come from or being hand made if  you are lucky.

FA858797-03D9-4966-8728-6C1B57A4E3C1.jpeg

For accessories I still keep my simplistic jewellery and do wear rings on nearly every single finger. I can’t help it even in this heat and humidity. Necklaces tend to bother me more so it’s usually just one piece rather than stacking and layering which seems to be hugely popular these days. It looks great but when you are sweating and everything gets tangled it is just annoying.

WOAH this post was a lot longer than expected but something I wanted to talk about because often when you do move country you do experience a change of style. This has happened to me even as a teenager. Have you experienced these sort of style changes? Let me know your story in the comments below.

Dior Saddle Bag Returns

Hi guys,

I’m addressing the controversy surrounding the re-release of the Dior Saddle bag that  happened last week.

If you are a fashion follower on Instagram you would have seen sometime late last week all the fashion bloggers/ influencers & celebrities suddenly posted about their new Dior Saddle bag with the #diorsaddle (examples below). Now there is actually nothing wrong with this as the job of this advertising or marketing strategy was to get visibility. Also, bloggers and influencers have been getting “free stuff” in return for their posts and modelling shots since the beginning.

But what bothered me about this was the way it was done as my whole instagram was suddenly full of pics of everyone wearing this bag or unboxing it. To me it kind of cheapened the name of Dior. Dior to me is high end luxury and often doesn’t need typical advertising as the name in itself is enough. The House of Dior was established in 1946 and has led the way in tailoring with the famous Dior Bar jacket and of course the Lady Dior bag named after Princess Diana.

There is tons of history with this brand and I don’t think they in fact needed to do this as the bag itself is a re-invention of a classic style from the early 2000s. People were already interested in Maria Grazia Chiuri’s take on this when it appeared on the runaway as part of their 2018 Autumn/Winter collection and this peaked when we all were frantically searching Ebay and other bag re-sellers for vintage saddle bags. This then caused the price of these to skyrocket but for those of you that kept your saddle bags, good for you as you can now hashtag without forking out for the 2018 release. 😀

Dior-Saddle-Bag-Vogue-India-866x487079B0B88-047E-4190-AB16-85DD8740488F-5689-0000061092E0E2A8

Personally I knew I had to have this bag as soon as I saw it on the runway. Big PLUS; I appreciate what an important bag this is in Dior’s catalogue and want to be a part of its resurgence under Maria Grazia Chiuri as I personally adore what she has done with the brand!

In order to obtain this bag or attempt to get it I have sacrificed the Fendi Mon Tresor mini bucket in the Fendi Zucca print for this one. I have also put on the market two bags that are no longer getting the wear they used to. One is the Givenchy Antigona in black so if interested let me know at theexpatbali@gmail.com. The other is my Prada tote which to be honest is not in the greatest condition so who knows if it will even sell. I am in fact so smitten that I have pre-ordered for a September drop in Australia. I of course will be wanting it in the classic Oblique print and will use my lady Dior bag strap to make it cross body. Can you tell I’m excited and know exactly how to style it…haha.

I hope that you find this post helpful in unpacking the marketing blitz that happened with Dior and some of the reasons why I disliked it, as I said it has nothing to do with the freebie part and clearly know I still want this gorgeous bag!!!

If you have any thoughts on the Dior saddle bag let me know in the comments would love to hear it.

Get Excited Virgil Abloh for Louis Vuitton Has Arrived

Hi all,

As some of you may know Virgil Abloh of Off-White was named the Creative Director of Louis Vuitton Menswear and boy am I looking forward to his first collection which occurred at some point today.

Lv1

Louis Vuitton recently tweeted some sneak peeks and WOAH!!!! I’m currently in love with this holographic Keepall. It does keep to the traditional Keepall duffel shape and all but the material is iridescent and mostly clear which has me jumping at the bits to see it in real life. I’m also loving the added touch of the oversized chain strap. I knew Virgil would bring his own style to Vuitton and this is exceeding my expectation.

Off-White’s success is due to its mix of tradition and streetwear plus the use of industrial materials e.g. seat belts as shoulder straps to bags…GENIUS….! I was hoping he would continue this with Vuitton and so far it looks like he has.

This Keepall iridescent bag looks to be available in blue too…

Lv5

Some more sneak peeks of Virgil’s first collection. It looks like the oversized chain will be a theme throughout this season…cannot wait!!!!

Lv2

What is this material?? 😱 😱

Lv6

Hope everyone is as excited as me to watch his collection in full. In the meantime here is a preview video Louis Vuitton has done.

See you next time. The expat xx

The Best from the Net-A-Porter Sale

Hi,

If you guys are like me and find the sales a little bit overwhelming this will be the post for you.

Here is the best of the best from the Net-A-Porter Sale Australia.

JW Anderson Medium Pierce Bag – $1,890

E5B3F15D-39F0-4BEF-99C0-FC61029A70D6

This bag to my suprise has continued to be around and not just a fleeting trend as I thought it might have been. I actually really do like this bag, so much so that I own a silver one bought from the Net-A-Porter Sale around Christmas time. It is quite versatile and can be made into a clutch or an over the shoulder bag. Love this pale blue version as well.

Chloe Faye Small Backpack – $1,704.34

09024AE0-992D-4E68-841D-4C9FB6C47ADC

Love, love this bag. Mine is a staple in my wardrobe as makes my outfits feel effortless and laid back. Also, can’t get passed this red colour. A retake on the classic Faye shoulder bag you cannot go wrong by adding this to your cart.

Cult Gaia Big Bamboo Tote – $155.93

F5948FE5-49AF-4687-A573-F0E7E7250735

The Cult Gaia Ark bag was everywhere last season and now it has returned in different styles. This larger sized tote version is more me to be honest. It can hold quite a bit and is perfect for never ending days at the beach. Adding to my cart now!!!

Saint Laurent Card Holder – $290.50

48F77765-68BA-4898-A7D0-C473BE38EBAF

This Saint Laurent Card Holder is to die for! It has a slightly better design than the average card holder as it has a zippered pouch that can fit cash in it. Also, love the way the card holder slots are placed making for easy access and ability to see the cards beforehand.

Marc Jacobs Belt Bag – $201.99

1757FDA8-2F7F-42B5-80B2-8321A7281360

Love these Marc Jacobs belt bags! These remind me of the actual ones from the 90s with its bright colours and simple designs. If you are wanting to add a belt bag to your wardrobe without a ridiculous price tag I would pick this as the price is excellent with 50% off.

Victoria Beckham Aviator Sunglasses – $424

9A8ECE53-4D00-454A-A534-C456DD5A6B76

Can I just say Victoria Beckham sunglasses are seriously fantastic and these ones are no exception. I think her classic aviator styles are the best ever and will elevate your outfit. Also, if you travel a lot why not take style tips from VB and use these shades as you exit the airport. I for one never leave home without..haha!!!

Larsson & Jennings Rose Gold Watch – $312

AA4E1978-45BA-4DD6-9D85-E8F26D878872

I love the minimalist feel of Larsson & Jennings watches and this one in rose gold with the white face is beautiful. I don’t think I personally can justify this as I don’t tend to wear watches here in Bali but you never know.

Common Projects Suede Sneakers – $198

4D0824E2-C932-4050-915C-EA2C84A3481D

I adore Common Projects sneakers and these ones are in the perfect blush colour! Get your hands on these while sizes are still available. I’m actually adding these to my cart too. What can you do.

That’s all folks!! If you are at all interested please check out the sales as there are many more items that are great deals that I haven’t mentioned!

On a side note: I would just like to say that for those of us that love handbags you would have no doubt fallen in love with Kate Spade bags and accessories. I for sure was one of them…I definitely regret not getting the cactus shaped bag she had. I love her fun and preppy designs. R.I.P. Kate Spade and thank you for showing us fashion is fun and full of bright colours. If you or someone you know is struggling please reach out for help.

The Return of Monogram and Logos Everywhere…

So it turns out the 90s and early 2000s has returned in full force. I have seen many of the major fashion houses return to their signature monogram on accessories, shoes and ready to wear. Obviously it never really left Louis Vuitton as their monogram bags are some of the most affordable in their line and classic to boot.

I am talking about the Dior monogram that adorned the classic Saddle bag. First I can’t believe they re-released the Saddle bag with their signature monogram, I’m all but drooling all over my keyboard for this pic.

079B0B88-047E-4190-AB16-85DD8740488F-5689-0000061092E0E2A8

Dior-Oblique-Bags

I’m not sure I can justify the Fall 2018 version but there are plenty of vintage bags on the market that you can pick up for a steal. I might be in fact doing that right now in my second tab trying to find the bargain of the century…😆

In other brands Gucci has been rejuvenated under the leadership of Alessandro Michele. They not only make me want to buy Gucci but want me to dive back into their archives waiting for the return of one of their classics. This can be seen in the Ophidia line and I’m particularly fond of this one. It has a vintage feel and a classic camera bag shape which lends itself to ease of wear and accessibility.

gucci ophidia

The other brand that has brought the monogram back in a bag way is Fendi with their beloved Zucca print. As far as I’m aware this print has been a part of Fendi since the 60s and has had a huge resurgence in the last two seasons. Everyone I know who loves fashion is after the Zucca print in the Kan I and Peekaboo styles. Personally if I had to choose I would pick the Kan I in the leather and velvet combination…😱

fendi zucca

peekaboo2

Fashion is cyclical and all the trends that existed in a particular period are in one way or another reinterpreted for a new era and generation. Fashion is fickle one minute the logo is too much and the next; bloggers and celebrities alike are adopting the monogram back into their wardrobes. This creates hype for these styles and then they sell out making us want it even more now that it’s not readily available. I’m not just saying this is applicable to only bags either because in clothing we are seeing a love of all things monogram. This is evident by Kim Kardashian West who wore head-to-toe Fendi with the double F logo. If you haven’t seen it get onto it ASAP!!!!

This is how the fashion industry sets the trends and ultimately creates the look of the season or year which will then filter down into the H&M, Topshop and Zara of the word who present the logo trend on a friendlier budget. I can only say this is a trend and who knows how long these classic monogram pieces will stick around for but at the moment the monogram logo is here to stay.

Clear PVC is BACK!!!

Hello everyone,

I’ve noticed a trend over these last couple of weeks, the return of clear PVC accessories. This trend has come back as my 12 year old self rocked a clear smiley face backpack from either Wet Seal or Limited Too. Much like this one…

FDE83925-5BB7-49EF-9517-7B876A207E9E

But this time around much more high end designers are taking on this PVC clear trend. Chanel released these bags which to be honest I really like but would I pay $2,000 for PVC, absolutely not! I’m not sure if the quality from 90s backpack has improved. I can still remember that it was not the best and would kind of stick together. I would hope you wouldn’t have that problem if you were buying from Chanel or any other brands now.

I do see myself jumping on this bandwagon as wouldn’t it be easier at festivals and other large events to have a clear bag to go through security rather than having them rummage through it. Also, airports it would make sense to have a clear bag, I’m sure you have to still put it through the scanner but still everyone can see yes you are only caring a wallet, phone, passport, a few makeup items and your iPad for travel.

EE1CA0FD-5FA4-4DB8-A94B-3E64F6FCFFF9A57F4AB2-BAC4-4072-8132-53626E22BD01

I do like Chanel’s use of the green and blue PVC so as to give a green or blue tinge when you see the items in your bag plus differentiating yourself from the overuse of all things clear is a bonus!

Not only are big design houses going for this, the mid-range brands are doing it too. This is in fact where I see myself rocking this trend again. This Staud one is perfect and if you don’t want all your handbag contents viewable there is a pouch which is removable to hide your things in. It is available in white and tan faux croc. Either colour would do me but leaning towards the tan croc one. Hold your horses everyone this is SOLD OUT everywhere! I’ve been trying to get this for ages and I’m on the wait list for it on Net-a-Porter and the Staud website.

79D6DB96-F456-4AE1-9FF4-08174EBC6AC6

Aside from these options I am sure the High street will no doubt come out with their version shortly. I managed to order two online for cheap prices so you can check them out here…

Shop Girl LA transparent Tortoiseshell bag

Cozy N Chic LaRue Clear Tote

Also, if clear bags are not your thing how about clear clothing. I don’t mean you go walking down the street in a clear t-shirt! More along the lines of clear outerwear. I’m particularly fond of the Miu Miu transparent raincoat!

The Burberry take on the classic trench is also worth looking at as well.

If you don’t want to invest that much money into this trend check out what Topshop has to offer.

8A421617-2988-47E1-942B-BDC623325486

Much like the bum bag there are many options for all budgets. Once I get my bags I might share how you can style this trend.

Until next time… xxx

Modern Day Suiting for an Everyday Gal

Hi everyone,

I am glad to be in Melbourne for Autumn…what an exciting time to be at home! First, I can safely say suiting is back for womens wear and I don’t mean super tailored pieces but rather oversized blazers and baggy pants paired with Converse and Vans. I am loving this trend as this speaks to the tomboy in me.

I’m particularly loving this looked pair with sneakers and glad that the sneakers trend has replaced our obsession with heals. I do like the look of a classic black pump but nothing can beat my Vans or Adidas Stan Smiths. Also, it can elevate an outfit if you pair it with a feminine dress or with wide pants. What can I say I’m a sucker for everything this season so everything to me looks good.

27478580-CEBA-491C-87F5-BE85FDC963EB

As I follow fashion weeks around the world I did notice that suiting and men’s tailoring was more apparent in womens street style and has obviously come here in stores like Seed, Witchery and Country Road. I’m loving the look in bright colours such as red and pinks and even toned-down in pastels. Obviously classic black and a grey pin stripe will never go out of fashion but why not try being bold! Also, loving the pants in a skinny leg paired with chunky Dr. Martens…woah this look has me written all over it!!!

I did spend an afternoon trying on this trend and working out which colours and styles worked for me. Some looked a little meh but I came to realise the outfit only works if your accessories are on point. I am wearing this trend to a wedding I have coming up and aside from swapping the sneakers for some mules so I can withstand a night on the dancefloor. I am pairing the suit with, you guessed it a bum bag I found in velvet. I want to try this trend as I mentioned in an earlier post but not nearly ready to fork out for the Gucci one.

3B50F30D-5C78-48EB-9725-AEAE5DD6DCEB

I love these looks so much I want to copy from head to toe.
