NGV The House of Dior: Seventy Years of Haute Couture

Hi Guys,

Welcome back. So many things happening at the moment. I want to share so badly what I have been working on but trying to keep things quiet for now. Something I can share is Bare Cactus, please check out Bare Cactus on Instagram. Obviously not fully operational yet but there is so much more to come in that space.

Aside from that since I have been back in Melbourne I was lucky enough to get myself the the NGV for the Dior exhibition. I have been waiting for this for months and unfortunately I had left when it stared but I have managed to get to this stunning exhibition! I of course accessorised with a stunning Dior piece which you may hear more about later.

I felt truly overwhelmed by the whole experience and being in the room with couture pieces. I’m just so in awe of Mr. Dior’s work particularly around those tailored pieces. I love the suiting and the “Bar Jacket”. There is something magical about those full skirts with the matching jacket. Also, looking at the transition from one creative director to another such as Galliano > Simons > Chiuri. Its fascinating to see the change in direction.

Apologies you can see me in the mirror but you can catch a glimpse of my limited edition Lady Dior bag…😉

I think my favourite part was understanding a bit more about the Atelier. I am so fascinated about how these beautiful pieces are hand sewn and the craftsmanship involved. I have watched the Dior doco “Dior and I” and fell in love with their personality and ability to bring the design to life.

IMG_0036

Galliano, oh my!!! Galliano left the House of Dior under controversy but you cannot deny the talent involved for some of his work. It is outrageous in many ways but one has to appreciate the creativity and art involved. I just think of the effort to get a design like that on a runway.

The era of Raf Simons is my favourite personally and thats only because I am fairly minimalist and love tailoring. So to be able to see pieces off the runway of past seasons was just 😱 for me. The red coat below is something I could see in my wardrobe now so thats why I think Simons make clothes for women now and in this time.

Looking forward I’m in awe of the way in which Maria Grazia Chiuri has made Dior her own. Having a female at the head has encouraged a different perspective on what I see as classic Dior. There are not so many tailored jackets and full skirts but soft pieces with the use of intricate beading. I am in love with the new design of the Lady Dior that I had to get one myself. The use of sheer materials and berets, plus the reinvention of the classic t-shirt has just brought more people to Dior. I didn’t think I would fall hard after Raf left but I have. She will bring a whole new generation to the House of Dior.

Look at this stunning custom Dior wedding dress for Miranda Kerr. The detail up close is unbelievable and a photo doesn’t do it justice.

Here are some other pics I managed to grab…I was so gobsmacked that some of the photography might be a little dodgy…hahaha!!!

Its been a week since I’ve been and I am still thinking about it. I managed to purchase the coffee table book. It is $59 AUD which is not bad and was able to get a print which I am going to frame for my house. I knew I would be sucked in.

Also, I went to see this alone which was so much easier for me to take everything in at my pace. It is great to have friends/family going with you but I found it to be a nice stroll around the gallery. I didn’t get distracted and I actually spent the time in parts of the exhibition where I wanted to be.

I can’t recommend this exhibition enough so if you can get yourself along to it. It ends early November .

See you next time xoxox

What I’ve been up to

Hi Guys,

I am now back in Melbourne as we are waiting out this volcano situation. As much as I would love to be in Bali my husband was travelling in Oz for work and he was uncomfortable about me being in Bali on my own.

In any case I’m enjoying Melbourne now as its officially SPRING!!!. I’m going to head to the NGV for the Dior exhibition and I cannot wait. Look out for a blog post for that.

Aside from that I managed to get a new video up for a carefree makeup look in Bali. As I said in the video, the lighting is not that great. I hope you enjoy this video and look out for a reveal video shortly.

See you next time. The expat xxx

Tegenungan Waterfall

Hi All

I am back at it today with a more travel related post. I know I have bombarded you with fashion related posts 🙂 I do like to mix things up a bit so that you guys can see beautiful Bali. Also, a Bali beyond Kuta and a typical night out.

On Sunday R and I managed to finally get out and about in Bali. There is lots to see and we booked a driver for the whole day. Tegenungan is about an hour away from Sanur but depending on traffic it could be longer. The rule here, make time for traffic as it can sneak up on you.

We had a beautiful time. Once we got there we had to pay a fee to get in and there was a little walk to get to see the waterfall. The walk itself was a little bit rocky at times and there is a little climbing so I suggest wearing closed shoes, the best is a trainer of some sort. I saw girls and guys in flip flops and sandals and I wondered how they were comfortable trekking down then up.

It was nice to get out and about in nature and I did take a dip under the waterfall. You are not allowed to get too close but you can experience that feeling of the mist covering you. Also, worth noting is that when you do go into the water the ground is very rocky so if you have some proper water shoes thats great too. I didn’t and went barefoot so I experienced some pain walking around an not in a good foot massage way. We enjoyed the beauty and we got to walk to the top which was nice to see the waterfall from the top down. There is some beautiful artwork done there through rocks. It is a stunning waterfall but I hear there are some even better ones around Bali so those are on my list too. I’m hoping to get to them.

We also managed to make a quick stop to the Kopi Luwak plantation. We got to see the Luwak animal and see how it goes from 💩 to how it gets roasted and then gets to your coffee. Very interesting indeed. I believe Kopi Luwak is the most expensive coffee so worth visiting if you like your coffee. We got to do some tasting of some teas and other coffees made at the plantation. There was a beautiful Mangosteen tea and a lovely coconut coffee. These are free to try when you visit and you only have to pay to try the Kopi Luwak or if you want to purchase any of the ones you tasted. Of course we did try the Kopi Luwak and I must say it is smooth but I am not sure I would drink that on a day-to-day basis. I ended up only purchasing a herbal tea. No Kopi Luwak for me.

What an amazing day we had. We also managed to get a quick trip to Hakata ikkousha ramen which is lovely. Ramen is not readily available in Sanur so this was a treat.

I managed to capture some beautiful shots that I thought I would share with you all. A video is to come as well…

See you next time. The expat in Bali

Obligatory What’s In My Bag Post

Hi everyone,

Apologies I have not posted but I had been down with Bali Belly. Not good at all and I would not wish that upon anyone. Feeling a 💯 better but still shaky on the food side of things. I just want to be careful not to put anything else a bit dodgy in my body.

I did manage to get my video up so if you haven’t already checked it out please do.

This post is a continuation of this video with some more up close lookbook style photos of what’s in my bag. I know you guys got to see some stuff in my previous post. After this I promise I will not go on and on about this bag.

So without further blabbing here we go…

Beauty Empties for the month

Hello…

Today I am back with another post and this time its regarding my beauty empties for the month. Although, its not really a month as some of these items have taken me a while to get through.

My next video will cover some of these as well…I am pretty sure I forgot to mention a few when I filmed yesterday. Blame my stupid filming brain. When I film it tends to be a brain dump so I can go all over the shop lol 😜

My first product is the Evo Fabuloso Platinum blonde colour intensifying conditioner. This is the greatest stuff as I have super black straight hair and this is important in keeping the colour in my hair fresh and not lifeless before my next visit to the salon. I only use this once a week after doing a normal wash and once I towel dry my hair then the conditioner goes in next and is left in for at least 1 hour. I try to keep it in as long as possible at least that is what my hairdresser says to do so maybe do it on a day when not out and about. Then I wash it out and dry as normal.

I believe there are other versions not just the platinum blonde one but considering my hair is black and I am blonde now this is the best for me.

You can purchase this and other Evo products through Adore Beauty and is $39.95AUD.

The next item is an all time favourite and is the Urban Decay All Nighter Setting Spray. The one linked here is the full sized version but I have the travel sized one and its perfect for those on the go. I think it does make a difference particularly in a more humid climate. The humidity and heat requires me to set up my makeup well or else… A little baking for under the eye and under the contour and this setting spray once everything is done does helps make it look less bleh as the day wares on. Its so good I even bought two at the one time to avoid ever going without. The full size is $49AUD and travel I believe is $23AUD from Mecca. Also, not sure about the packing I think it might have changed.

My next empty is the Sephora eye remover cotton buds. These are from the Sephora collection and are excellent for removing mistakes made with eye makeup. I have used this to fix my winged liner as well as any smudges that occur. People say the tip is hard to break to get the product moving to the cotton but I don’t feel that way but you do need a little force to do so. You can get this from Sephora online and instore for $10AUD.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

The Nars Radiant Creamy Concealer is one of those cult products out there. It has such a lovely thick consistency and brightens the under eye area and reduces any dark circles while covering any imperfections. It is what it says it is, and is super creamy but easy to blend out as well.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

I’m not going to repurchase this one as I have already bought the Too Faced Born This Way concealer. I have wanted to try the Born This Way range as people have said its nice and moisturising on the skin. The foundation has to wait considering the list of foundations I currently use. This concealer is creamy like the Nars one and does blend nicely but it might not be as blendable as radiant creamy concealer. I am still waiting for the Tare Shape Tape that everyone is going on about to be available down under at Sephora then I might give that a go next.

I’d say its a pretty good dupe for it. The price is only slightly different with the Nars one coming in at $40AUD and the Nars on is $44AUD.

So thats the list of my empties for the month or last few months. Hopefully you get a kick out of these and I will let you know when my video is up. You will also get a look at my makeup I wear for the day 😎

See you next time xoxo – the expat

What to watch on the small box

I am back again but this time with a chat about my current favourite tv shows.

My love of tv shows goes back to the days of Dawson’s Creek, yes I am a child of the 90s. Although, over recent years the West Wing, Alias and my favourite the X-files have been what I had been obsessed with. I have the West Wing box set and rewatching that show is like a revelation. The X-files is a little dated but still unbelievable for the UST.

I feel like tv is now having a renaissance and telling the great stories that movies have in the past. Film is still great story telling but the onset of Netflix etc…has meant that great stories can be told outside traditional formats. Often traditional major networks run tv shows seasons for 22 episodes and we in Australia have to wait a whole year before we see the next season. The show is often spoilt by the time we get it. It is now much better with streaming services and networks realising their international counterparts are getting the raw end of the deal. There is also fatigue we feel as 22 episodes per season is a lot and I feel the writing getting worse sometimes. I won’t name names but there are a few shows that drag and the humour and drama just feels repetitive.

I am currently enjoying these shows by far. I am sure the list will go on as people tell me about shows and I hear the hype.

The Handmaid’s Tale – based on the book this series is very unnerving and quite confronting at its view of a world where women have no rights. The cinematography gives the whole show an eerie feel. The way it has been depicted from the novel is great and it takes lines directly from the book.

Stranger Things – a throwback to all the great 80s sci-fi shows and movies with a stellar cast. Those kids are such incredible actors and the characters are hard not to love. By the way the soundtrack is to die for and infuses electronic with the great 80s classics. This alone is worth watching it for. Season 2 promises to be more exciting as we all find out more about the upside down.

The last show that I am currently loving at the moment is The Crown. This is such an amazing production. The whole thing is just so well done and looks like you have stepped back in time. I am looking forward to the second season and finding more about this behind the look view of the monarchy. In the first season John Lithgow’s Winston Churchill is just fantastic and what I would imagine him to be like given my limited knowledge in this historical figure.

If you have any other tv shows you think I should watch please comment below.
