Beauty Empties for the month

Hello…

Today I am back with another post and this time its regarding my beauty empties for the month. Although, its not really a month as some of these items have taken me a while to get through.

My next video will cover some of these as well…I am pretty sure I forgot to mention a few when I filmed yesterday. Blame my stupid filming brain. When I film it tends to be a brain dump so I can go all over the shop lol 😜

My first product is the Evo Fabuloso Platinum blonde colour intensifying conditioner. This is the greatest stuff as I have super black straight hair and this is important in keeping the colour in my hair fresh and not lifeless before my next visit to the salon. I only use this once a week after doing a normal wash and once I towel dry my hair then the conditioner goes in next and is left in for at least 1 hour. I try to keep it in as long as possible at least that is what my hairdresser says to do so maybe do it on a day when not out and about. Then I wash it out and dry as normal.

I believe there are other versions not just the platinum blonde one but considering my hair is black and I am blonde now this is the best for me.

You can purchase this and other Evo products through Adore Beauty and is $39.95AUD.

The next item is an all time favourite and is the Urban Decay All Nighter Setting Spray. The one linked here is the full sized version but I have the travel sized one and its perfect for those on the go. I think it does make a difference particularly in a more humid climate. The humidity and heat requires me to set up my makeup well or else… A little baking for under the eye and under the contour and this setting spray once everything is done does helps make it look less bleh as the day wares on. Its so good I even bought two at the one time to avoid ever going without. The full size is $49AUD and travel I believe is $23AUD from Mecca. Also, not sure about the packing I think it might have changed.

My next empty is the Sephora eye remover cotton buds. These are from the Sephora collection and are excellent for removing mistakes made with eye makeup. I have used this to fix my winged liner as well as any smudges that occur. People say the tip is hard to break to get the product moving to the cotton but I don’t feel that way but you do need a little force to do so. You can get this from Sephora online and instore for $10AUD.

The Nars Radiant Creamy Concealer is one of those cult products out there. It has such a lovely thick consistency and brightens the under eye area and reduces any dark circles while covering any imperfections. It is what it says it is, and is super creamy but easy to blend out as well.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

I’m not going to repurchase this one as I have already bought the Too Faced Born This Way concealer. I have wanted to try the Born This Way range as people have said its nice and moisturising on the skin. The foundation has to wait considering the list of foundations I currently use. This concealer is creamy like the Nars one and does blend nicely but it might not be as blendable as radiant creamy concealer. I am still waiting for the Tare Shape Tape that everyone is going on about to be available down under at Sephora then I might give that a go next.

I’d say its a pretty good dupe for it. The price is only slightly different with the Nars one coming in at $40AUD and the Nars on is $44AUD.

So thats the list of my empties for the month or last few months. Hopefully you get a kick out of these and I will let you know when my video is up. You will also get a look at my makeup I wear for the day 😎

See you next time xoxo – the expat

What to watch on the small box

I am back again but this time with a chat about my current favourite tv shows.

My love of tv shows goes back to the days of Dawson’s Creek, yes I am a child of the 90s. Although, over recent years the West Wing, Alias and my favourite the X-files have been what I had been obsessed with. I have the West Wing box set and rewatching that show is like a revelation. The X-files is a little dated but still unbelievable for the UST.

I feel like tv is now having a renaissance and telling the great stories that movies have in the past. Film is still great story telling but the onset of Netflix etc…has meant that great stories can be told outside traditional formats. Often traditional major networks run tv shows seasons for 22 episodes and we in Australia have to wait a whole year before we see the next season. The show is often spoilt by the time we get it. It is now much better with streaming services and networks realising their international counterparts are getting the raw end of the deal. There is also fatigue we feel as 22 episodes per season is a lot and I feel the writing getting worse sometimes. I won’t name names but there are a few shows that drag and the humour and drama just feels repetitive.

I am currently enjoying these shows by far. I am sure the list will go on as people tell me about shows and I hear the hype.

The Handmaid’s Tale – based on the book this series is very unnerving and quite confronting at its view of a world where women have no rights. The cinematography gives the whole show an eerie feel. The way it has been depicted from the novel is great and it takes lines directly from the book.

Stranger Things – a throwback to all the great 80s sci-fi shows and movies with a stellar cast. Those kids are such incredible actors and the characters are hard not to love. By the way the soundtrack is to die for and infuses electronic with the great 80s classics. This alone is worth watching it for. Season 2 promises to be more exciting as we all find out more about the upside down.

The last show that I am currently loving at the moment is The Crown. This is such an amazing production. The whole thing is just so well done and looks like you have stepped back in time. I am looking forward to the second season and finding more about this behind the look view of the monarchy. In the first season John Lithgow’s Winston Churchill is just fantastic and what I would imagine him to be like given my limited knowledge in this historical figure.

If you have any other tv shows you think I should watch please comment below.

I am back

Hello All,

I have returned from my few days in Jakarta. It was a pretty chilled trip for me and R. We both took the time to spend with family and ate some of our faves there. Yum cha was a highlight as well as my favourite hot pot place Grandma’s Suki.

Jakarta is the home of massive shopping malls and we did end up going to a fair few. I did do my rounds at Dior, Louis V and Balenciaga. I just rediscovered my love of Balenciaga so perfect timing there. There will be a reveal of something here and on YT.

A few key things the cafe culture has grown since being in Jakarta a year ago. I have to say there is a true coffee culture that is growing as there is a focus on techniques such as cold brew, pour over and syphon coffee. The uses of these methods requires technique and most of all love of coffee. I must say I had a lovely experience at Djournal Coffee at Grand Indonesia. The whole set up was impressive and in my next video you will come along with me as I take my in-laws there. Also, I believe there is more than one in Jakarta which might make it easier for those that dread the traffic there.

Another thing worth pointing out is the service is excellent. They were able to recommend coffee based on different regions and the flavours I enjoy. I will definitely be back.

Another highlight was trying LaoLao frozen yoghurt. The company is Spanish and uses natural yoghurt instead of offering millions of different flavours. You can add fruit, crunch and a sauce for your froyo.

The other place I love is Sensory Lab which I have known about for a while as there is one in Little Collins Street. Jakarta is not known to have a cafe culture. I come from Melbourne where life revolves around coffee shops and cafes. We go to catch up with friends, have meetings, complete work and simply sit and destress from the day. When I was working in the corporate world we would always make them time to pop down to our local cafe. We might not always drink coffee but it was the mere act of going that made it an experience and getting out of the office was aways a bonus 🙂

This is a recent opening in Jakarta and is a lovely place. The actual cafe has great decor and nice ambience. It actually look like it fell from Melbourne into Indonesia. Everything about it screams Aussie cafe. My coffee recommendation is the piccolo and the ice cold white which are both A+++. The traditional latte was also a nice homage to its Melbourne counterpart.

The other thing worth saying is the food menu. It is absolutely fantastic. I always struggle in Jakarta with cafe or Western food as it can often be subpar. The local food is fantastic but they have yet to master this. I have had some terrible sandwiches, salads and pastas when travelling in Indonesia and generally throughout Asia. There are always some exceptions to this and Sensory Lab is just that. The breakfast food including classic eggs on toast and eggs benny are worth coming for if you don’t do coffee. I am officially in love and know where I will be heading when back!

These are just a few places I managed to get to over the last few days. I have plenty more but so if you need others please comment or email me. Below are some extra photos from our trip.  😍

Also look out for my video from the trip – its coming and currently being edited at the moment.

My allegiance is to Dior

I told you I would bring a fashion focus to this blog.

I have to say these days I’m coveting everything and anything from the house of Dior.

I am lucky enough to own two Dior bags, a large Lady Dior in patent black and a gorgeous Diorever in cracked lambskin. These are the two bags that I adore with all my heart. If I had to pick two pieces to keep forever these would be it and they both are Dior. Yes, I admit I think the direction it is going is far more impressive than that of Chanel or Hermes both heavyweights in their own right. I just think there is something new and fresh for the brand over the last 10 years with Raf Simons and now Maria Grazia Chiuri. All this being said if you were to give me a classic Chanel jacket or a Kelly bag I would not say no to these pieces, in fact anything from Chanel or Hermes I would be pretty happy with.

Dior to me is at the top of their game and they have done what I didn’t think could be done; reinvention of the Lady Dior in a way that hasn’t taken away from its original but made it more practical and user friendly. Take the original zip opening of the bag which is a pain. I can attest to this as mine even though large is hard to get items out of as its narrow and feels like a bottomless pit when trying to reach in. The new soft Lady Dior has taken this into consideration and instead of a zip has a solid flap that allows you to make wider when searching around for your phone etc…

The below studded one is beautiful in real life and comes with the new DIOR hardware. It comes in both calfskin and lambskin leather.

Of course it wouldn’t be a chat about Dior without mentioning their famous tribal earrings. I’m not much of a designer jewellery person but these are stunning in person. I have yet to bite the bullet on these but who knows maybe I will. The only other jewellery piece I want to mention is the Dior and J’Adior chokers. I am fully on the bandwagon of these. I love 90s fashion and this just makes it especially bad ass considering its Dior. More so than the tribal earrings one of these chokers will hopefully be in my collection soon as I’m going to explore the second hand market for these.

Aside from these my new love is the My Lady Dior bag in a size between the original small and medium lady Dior. It is the perfect in between size and I think can be more casually worn because of the size. The other great thing is the thicker shoulder strap and the customisable badges that you get with the bag. My understanding is that you get three badges with the bag and you can pay for extra. Personally I think three is enough but I guess the option is there for more. I am eyeing off the light blue version which for the life of me I can’t find a picture of but I did see it on someone’s instagram. It is the most stunning blue and in some light it can even look grey without being grey like below. In the Brisbane store I tried on the silver and it was just the right size and felt good crossbody as I think the medium looks a little strange when worn that way.

Anyways I have rambled on enough about my ❤️ of all things Dior.

I am off to Jakarta tomorrow for the weekend so I might not be as regular with posts but I am doing some filming there so hopefully you will see some cool footage from that.

Places to go…people to meet

Hello,

I am back with a few recommendations for those either travelling to Bali or currently looking for a place to go. This will focus on my local area of Sanur and will definitely not be an exhaustive list of places to go as I am sure there are many fantastic places I have yet to discover.

I have discovered one of the best coffee experiences here and it goes by the name of Reaktiv Coffee. There does not seem to be a website but I have linked their Facebook and their Instagram.  They offer both cold brew coffee as well as nitro cold brew. Cold brew coffee is nothing new and is something that many cafes offer. The coffee has a less bitter taste but still that dose of caffeine that we all want and need sometimes. The amount of coffee given is a lot and they can always top up the milk if you run out. I was fairly impressed and the owner did say he cold brews his coffee for 16 hours.

Now the nitro cold brew is something I haven’t heard of and I did related it to the ice cream craze that is going on but the ice cream uses liquid nitrogen and this coffee uses gas nitrogen. I am yet to try this but from what I am told it comes out from the tap like beer with the head and maybe looks like Guinness. Obviously there is no alcohol in this but the taste is supposed to be worth trying. I will let you know how I go once I taste it.

The other place I would like to recommend is Grocer & Grind which is a cafe/restaurant that has locations outside Sanur as well. I first visited Grocer & Grind in Seminyak last time I came and I must say I loved it and felt it was better than Sisterfields which seems to be dropped into Bali from Melb.

The Sanur one is just as good to me and I particularly enjoy an ice latte with less ice and milk to hit the spot. The ice latte already has the double shot which of course is very important. 😉

I have been a few times now for a light dinner and breakfast and can say that their poached eggs are excellent and would be what you could expect in Melbourne. For me I like my poached eggs to be runny once the knife goes through and can say their eggs benedict do just that. I have also enjoyed their pizzas and some delicious tapas style food from their sharing menu.

A couple of other ones to include:

Soul in a Bowl – I have not tried this but there are many good reviews and it looks delicious from what I can see on FB and Google.

Kokoya Japanese – If you are after good quality Japanese at a good price in Sanur this is well worth a look. We went here and I have to say I enjoyed this meal, the tempura was lovely and the crispy salmon rolls are fantastic and my go to dish from here.

The only other place I would like to mention is Revolver Espresso which is not in Sanur but Seminyak. If you are like me and enjoy coffee I would say this is a must to venture out to. The coffee is the best I have had in Bali and meets that standard for a good latte. I was very happy to find this little gem.

I hope some of these places help on where to go in Sanur especially if you are a caffeine addict. Also, if you have any recommendations for me please comment.

Until next time…

Welcome one and all

Hi All

For those that were followers from my previous blog feathermesilly this is a reincarnation of that blog. Obviously I will still talk about my love for fashion and handbags. What type of blog would it be if I didn’t do that!

Aside from that there have been a few life changes that have occurred for me. This included hubby leaving job and getting a new job based in Bali. Also, me deciding to leave my job to join hubby in Bali which is where I will be based with a few trips back home 🙂

We have uprooted our life from the fast pace of Melbourne to the much slower pace but sunnier Bali. I have to say this has already come with challenges for me particularly who is used to knowing the ins and outs of Melbourne and who is getting to know new customs and ways of doing things. For example, if you are a Melbournian coffee drinking lover like me it is a MUST to ask for an extra shot in your beverage of choice or you will be left a little heartbroken.

I have left my full time job back home which is what I wanted and have taken this as a sign that I should dedicate my time to the blogging world and my youtube channel. I’m hoping the time I have now will allow for me to mix both written and video content regularly to get a glimpse into the new adventure I am just starting.

This will be a blog about the lifestyle change in Bali as well as where to go in Bali as I experience those things too. As I said earlier there will be a lot of fashion content including lookbooks for what to wear on a daily basis when you live on a tropical island. I will also do the best makeup for the warm weather of Bali, as my full coverage Giorgio Armani Power Fabric foundation is not going to handle this humidity. Best leave that at home.

Please follow this blog and if you want to know something specific about my time here feel free to email me at theexpatbali@gmail.com

In the meantime in order for you to catch up on my arrival in Bali please checkout this short video.
